GWYNN’S ISLAND, VA. — Meat-free crab cakes are the latest alternative seafood product from Mind Blown by The Plant Based Seafood Co. The crab cakes join a lineup that includes plant-based dusted shrimp and scallop products.
Seasoned with traditional crab cake flavors like celery, onion and panko breadcrumbs for a classic flaky texture, the crab cake alternatives are non-GMO and free from soy, dairy, corn and palm oil. They are available nationwide at Sprouts Farmers Market alongside other Mind Blown products, marking the brand’s first national distribution. They also are available for wholesale purchase through foodservice distributor VEDGEco.
Konjac powder, vegetable gum and vegetable root starch are the star ingredients in the company’s meat-free seafood. Mind Blown is an all-female, family-owned company leveraging more than two decades of experience creating conventional seafood products to develop new plant-based alternatives.
“For decades, we’ve been creating traditional crab cakes in small batches by hand through our company The Van Cleve Seafood Co.,” said Monica Talbert, co-founder of Mind Blown. “They’re one of our best-selling items… We wanted to make a plant-based version of our crab cakes and knew they would have to be identical to the original versions in taste and texture. We’re proud to say that in any application of a traditional crab cake, the Mind Blown versions do equally as well, if not better. They’re fantastic on their own, or in your favorite crab cake sandwich, slider or even stuffing.”
Since launching two years ago, Mind Blown has been named the Most Disruptive New Product of 2020 at Prepared Foods’ Spirit of Innovation awards and the Best Plant-Based Seafood Product of the Year at the World Plant-Based Awards. The company’s dusted scallops were named Best New Frozen Product at the New Hope Network 2022 Expo West NEXTY Awards.
