The Plant Based Seafood Company, a Gwynn’s Island, Virginia, U.S.A.-based seafood analog product venture, has launched the company's fourth Mind Blown plant-based seafood analog product.
The Plant Based Seafood Company was founded in 2020 by the owners of the Van Cleve Seafood Co., and received funding from Hatch, a global fund dedicated to investing and accelerating sustainable innovations in the seafood industry, in 2020. It launched a plant-based fried oyster analog product in December 2021.
In June 2022, the company launched its fourth seafood alternative product, plant-based crab cakes, now being sold at U.S. locations of Sprouts Farmers Markets. The cakes contain non-GMO plant-based protein, as well as konjac powder, vegetable gum, and vegetable root starch. The cakes are seasoned with celery, onion, and panko breadcrumbs.
“Pulling from our years of experience creating traditional crab cakes, we wanted to create a plant-based version that was identical to the taste and texture of the crab-filled ones that we used to make by hand,” Mind Blown Co-Founder Monica Talbert said. “Any application of a traditional crab cake, ours does equally as well, if not better. Our plant-based crab cakes are fantastic on their own, or in your favorite crab cake sandwich, slider, or even stuffing.”
In June 2022, the company announced a partnership with celebrity chef Tom Colicchio. Its "Plant-Based Dusted Scallops" was named the Best Plant Based Seafood Product of the Year at the 2022 World Food Innovation Awards, and won the Most Disruptive New Product of 2020 at the World Plant-Based Awards and Best New Frozen Product at the New Hope New work 2022 Expo West NEXTY Awards.
The product is now available at U.S. locations of Spourts Farmers Market.
